Bear and Webelos Family Campout (BL)

The Twenty-Second Annual Bear/Webelos Family Campout will be April 25-27, 2003 at Camp Thunderbird. We would like to encourage you to come on Friday evening and plan to start your fun weekend early.

Camp Thunderbird is located northeast of Cairo. Take Hwy. 63 north to Cairo (approximately 4.6 miles on 63 north of Moberly). Turn right on Route K for approximately 2.8 miles, turn left on Route CC for approximately 1.5 miles and then turn right on Route FF for approximately 2.5 miles to the front gate of Camp Thunderbird. There are redwood signs indicating "Camp Thunderbird" or "Boy Scout Camp" at each intersection. This is about a 45-minute to 1-hour drive from Columbia. Highway 63 is a very busy road and how long the trip will actually take depends on traffic.

Pre-registration will be done by pack. The deadline is April 18, 2003. Registration forms and details about the weekend are attached to this letter. Registration forms should be filled out and turned into your pack coordinator before the deadline date. Any registration forms turned in after April 17th will have to pay a late fee. The fee for this weekend is $15.00 per family. Late fee is $25. If a scout's family can't attend, but another family is willing to bring the Scout, the fee is $7.50. Late fee is $10.00.

Check-in at Camp Thunderbird will be Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. We will start again at 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning, until 7:45 a.m. If you can not arrive at the given times, please let us know so we can have someone at the front gate to help you. There will be someone at the gate to direct the unloading of gear and parking. PLEASE MARK EACH PIECE OF YOUR GEAR WITH YOUR NAME AND PACK NUMBER TO ASSURE THAT IT WILL BE UNLOADED AT THE CORRECT CAMPSITE. Be sure your stoves and lanterns are full of fuel, as we will be collecting all cans of propane, lighter fluid or other fuel to store away from the camping areas. Tractors and wagons and camp trucks will haul your gear to your campsite. All personal vehicles and campers will be left in the parking lot. There are no hookups for motor homes or campers. Upon arrival at the main gate of Camp Thunderbird, you will unload your gear by the sign designating your camping area. Registration is at Backer Lodge. Everyone should check in on your way to your campsite. This is where you will pick up schedules, maps.

Each family should bring all FOOD, supplies and equipment needed for primitive camping for their family. Please note that in celebration of our Twentieth Annual Bear-Webelos Family Campout we will all have a Family Picnic together Saturday noon, so please bring food for your family that is easily transported to the area in front of the OA Lodge. A list is attached of what you NEED to bring. Comfortable clothing is suggested - be prepared to dress for the weather. Lawn chairs or campstools for eating, leisure times and the campfire are most comfortable unless you prefer to sit on the ground. There will be some picnic tables in each campsite. Bring a couple pairs of comfortable walking shoes, as there will be a good deal of walking done over the weekend.
VERY IMPORTANT
We will be camping in the various campsites. Each pack will be assigned a campsite; however, there may be more than one pack in each campsite, depending on the total number of people attending. There are two camping areas in each campsite, one of which will be roped off because of recent seeding. Camp in the area that is not roped off. Please make sure everyone stays out of the seeded areas.

Camp stoves (half-55 gallon barrels) have been placed in each campsite. These are to be used for ALL FIRES. There will be no ground fires allowed. Even if you want to have a campfire, it must be built in the camp stove. To prepare the stoves for use put a little soil out of the woods in the bottom before building your fire. Do not dig the dirt out of the campsite. Fire barrels and buckets filled with water will be in each campsite as your first line of defense in case of a fire.

CAMPING TIPS:
If you purchase new camping equipment or borrow equipment from friends, set up the tent at home and practice lighting the stoves and lanterns before arriving at camp. ALSO, if it is a new tent, set it up and waterproof it according to manufacturer's directions. Make sure all the seams are sealed and don't leak.

The ground cloth is NECESSARY to keep dampness from coming through the floor of your tent. A tarp works well for this purpose. ALSO, if your tent does not have a rainfly, bring extra tarps for this. Practice setting your tent up with both of these. AND ALWAYS, bring an extra tarp and extra rope. It does occasionally rain at camp.
