Event Information for Troops and Crews

Camping and Check-In
Troops and Crews are encouraged to camp out and check in for the Klondike on Friday night. Units that are not camping will need to check in between 8:00 AM and 8:15 AM on Saturday, January 26. The opening ceremony will be at 8:20 AM. Events start at 8:30 AM and run until noon, when we’ll break for lunch and the cooking contest. The closing event of the Klondike will be the Troop Sled Race at 1:30 PM.

Meals on Friday night and Saturday morning are on your own. You may bring wood with you, and there may be wood available, if you cannot bring your own. Burn barrels are required, and there are a limited number available onsite, so if you have your own, please bring them.

Leaders’ Meeting
There will be a leader’s meeting/cracker barrel on Friday night. More details will be available when you arrive.

Volunteers Needed!
Every troop that registers for the Klondike needs to provide at least ONE adult leader to help man a Klondike station or help with the Gold Rush. Each troop will also be asked to assist in either set-up or clean-up. Please email Jim McCormick (jmccormi@truman.edu) or text him (660-956-2990) when you register with the names of potential helpers, the area that they can help with, and what other jobs your unit can help with. You can also contact him with questions at any time.

This year each patrol will be constructing a travois onsite to haul their gear around. There still will be a sled race using the traditional Klondike sled; we just won’t be using sleds to haul gear. The travois must be constructed from wood using lashings (no nails, bolts, or other fasteners) and cannot have wheels. Other than that, units are given some latitude as to design and construction of their travois, but anything deemed to be unsafe or not scout-like will not be allowed. If the travois comes apart during the competition, the patrol must repair it or be prepared to haul their gear on their backs for the remainder of the events.

Specifications for sleds to be used in the Troop Sled Race will be available at the January Roundtable. If you’d like a copy before that, let Jim McCormick know.

The events for the Klondike will emphasize T-2-1 skills (fire building, knot tying, map and compass, first aid, etc.), winter rescue and survival skills, plus special challenges.
